Events: Guests × Hours
The event industry baseline is one unit per 50 guests per 4 hours. As the event runs longer, each unit serves the same crowd more times, so you add capacity to keep wait times reasonable. The table below starts from that baseline before any alcohol adjustment. Find your peak attendance across the top and your event length down the side:

The Alcohol Adjustment
When alcohol is served, guests use restrooms far more often — plan on 25–35% more units than the table shows. A 500-guest, 6-hour reception that would take 12 units jumps to roughly 15–16 once a bar is involved. Beer gardens and all-day festivals with sustained drinking sit at the top of that range.
Construction: Crew × Shift Length
Job sites follow OSHA's 29 CFR 1926.51(c), which sets minimum toilet counts by the number of workers on site:
- 20 or fewer workers: 1 toilet.
- 20 to 199 workers: 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers.
- 200 or more workers: 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.
Those are legal minimums, not comfort targets.
